An investigation into words and expressions describing the figure of a person in vietnamese and english equivalents

Abstract

This paper is designed to investigate the semantic and cognitive meanings of words and expressions describing the figure of a person in Vietnamese and English equivalents. The research aims to identify the similarities and differences in the ways of using these words and expressions. Not stop at giving the definitions and explaining their semantic features of descriptive words, we also try to point out the similarities and differences between two languages.It is their concept and cognition that leads to the differences. To guarantee the validity and reliability of the examples, we select novels from both Vietnamese and English authors. Some suggestions to the language teaching and learning have been offered in the hope that Vietnamese learners of English can get great benefit from the study.
