A discourse analysis of English oscar acceptance speeches delivered by film award winners In the usa

Abstract

Based on the theories of discourse analysis, this study focused on describing and analyzing some discourse features in term of the layout, lexical choice, syntactic features, cohesive devices and stylistic devices in English Oscar Acceptance Speeches (EOASs). Firstly, in the theoretical background, many viewpoints of discourse analysis have been looked at. The data for the study was mainly collected from the reliable source on the Internet. The research was conducted based on the combination of a variety of methods, namely qualitative, quantitative, descriptive analysis. The findings in this study show that the layout, syntactic features, cohesive devices, stylistics were used as tools for logical argumentation, strong and coherent verbal communication, the art of attracting attraction from the audience. For the layout, Oscar Acceptance Speeches basically consist of three sections: introduction, body and conclusion following with various contents. As for lexical choice, personal pronoun and common terms were frequently used in EOASs, voice and sentence types were prominent grammatical features analyzed in the study. In addition, cohesive devices were also exploited. Lexical repetition was most frequently used in English, followed by antonymy, conjunction, reference and ellipsis. Stylistic devices also appeared in this study such as interjections, parallelism, hyperbole, climax etc. Hopefully, with the results the study may provide teachers, language learners and those interested in this field with some tips or important clues in the interpretation and production of some acceptance speeches.
