AN INVESTIGATION INTO LINGUISTIC FEATURES OF COMPLIMENTS USED IN TV SHOWS IN ENGLISH AND VIETNAMESE

Abstract

This thesis is an investigation into the compliments used in TV shows in English and Vietnamese. This study will (1) explain some concepts involved, (2) describe and analyze the syntactic and pragmatic features of compliments used in TV shows in English and Vietnamese, (3) discover the similarities and differences of these features between two languages. Next, draw the conclusion of the study. Then, put forward some implications for English language teaching and learning, for translators as well as anyone who are interested in English and Vietnamese TV shows. Finally, further researches are suggested for those who are in favor of this topic to go on perfecting this research. The syntactic and pragmatic features of compliments based on the analysis of the data collected from several American and Vietnamese TV shows.
