This study investigates into the linguistic features of English representative in English lecture discourse. More specifically, the study attempts to discover the pragmatic and semantic features of these representatives in order to find out the internal structures, syntactic realization and semantic functions of representatives in English lecture discourse. Data was collected from 720 extracts of TOEFL iBT recordings. After months of doing research based on the data collected, the study comes up with interesting findings and conclusions. Representatives in English lectures were found to be performed by different speech acts i.e. representative, directive and expressive. Those different speech acts brought about different performative forces that helped lecturers use language to fulfill the ultimate purpose of imparting knowledge effectively and flexibly. Taking those advantages, some recommendations on effective techniques of using language were also made.en_US
