The effect of using online english dictionaries for vocabulary development among fpt college students in da nang city

Abstract

This research delved into the impact of utilizing online English dictionaries on vocabulary development among students at FPT College in Da Nang City. The primary objective is to analyze how online English dictionaries influence the enhancement of vocabulary skills in FPT College students, encompassing their perceptions of online dictionary usage. The study also sought to evaluate the effects of these digital resources on vocabulary learning. Through a thorough exploration, the research aims to provide valuable insights into the effectiveness and relevance of online dictionaries in bolstering the vocabulary proficiency of FPT college students within the Da Nang City context. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study combined descriptive, quantitative, qualitative data collection methods. The quantitative aspect involved an online survey, pre-test and posttest, as well as reading and vocabulary assessments. Concurrently, the qualitative method involved students completing the Dictionary Using Record Form to gain insights into their utilization of online dictionaries. Initially, 54 students participated in the pre-vocabulary test and online survey, with a subsequent selection for involvement in reading comprehension exercises and vocabulary tests spanning three weeks. The chosen participants were divided into two groups: one using online dictionaries for the reading comprehension exercises, and the other relying on Google Translate instead of a dictionary. However, both groups did not use any forms of online dictionary for the vocabulary tests. The anticipated outcome of this research is to illuminate the current situation of college students using online dictionaries and elucidate how these tools contribute to their vocabulary development and overall English proficiency
