Abstract: | This thesis mainly aims at examining some used stylistic devices in “Run away” by Alice Munro and in its Vietnamese translational equivalent “Trốn chạy” translated by Trần Thị Hương Lan. The data of the study were collected from this English work and its Vietnamese translational equivalent. A combination of research methods was used for this thesis such as descriptive method, qualitative and quantitative method. The main theoretical bases of this thesis included Galperin and Đinh Trọng Lạc. On a close analysis, the thesis tries to find out some used stylistic devices namely metonymy, metaphor, hyperbole, simile, repetition and rhetorical questions. In addition, this study also attempts to find out the equivalences and non equivalences in translating stylistic devices in Vietnamese and the frequency of occurrences of these stylistic devices. The study revealed that among six types of stylistic devices similes were used with the highest frequencies in both English and Vietnamese. The findings of this thesis have served as a foundation for the researcher to put forward some implications for the teaching and learning of English as a foreign language, especially to better the awareness of learners in understanding and translating a work |
