Abstract: Listening is one of the most important skills in IELTS tests, which raises ability to get good job opportunities and high salary. However, listening skill was underestimated or even ignored in the schools where reading and writing were emphasized. In the past, teachers and students in secondary and high schools mainly focused on vocabulary, grammar, structure… which leads to the lack of knowledge on pronunciation, communication, listening comprehension. Most the first-year students are not familiar with a new form of tests in universities containing four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Moreover, even though when they become sophomore, dealing with listening tasks in IELTS are always difficult. To pass the IELTS tests for graduating, the second-year students should pay attention to practicing soon. Especially in section 2 of IELTS listening tests, some types of tasks such as map, diagram and plan are familiar with anyone taking the tests. They are often in trouble when doing these tasks and don’t know how to solve problems because they cannot find the reasons and solutions. That is the reason why an investigation into the difficulties in performing map, diagram, and plan tasks in Section 2 of the IELTS Listening test encountered by second-year students of the Faculty of English at UFLS, UD are conducted.
