Abstract: | It has been admitted that satire is one of the most interesting genres to the readers of all generations. And, among of the linguistic means for realizing satire, Irony is the strongest device with a big number of occurrences. The data of the study are collected from an American novel by Sinclair Lewis named Babbitt and Số Đỏ by Vũ Trọng Phụng which is used to make the contrastive analysis to support for the objectives of the study. With an aim to state a close relationship between one of the linguistic means for realizing satire and literature as well as its excellent contribution to the success of literary works and help the readers be fully aware of the lexical features, semantic features and cognitive effect achieved by the Irony and find out some similarities and differences of using irony in American literature and Vietnamese literature as well, we decided to carry out this study. Through a study on linguistic means for realizing satire in American novel, with reference to Vietnamese by using two novels mentioned, we hope to bring about some certain benefits to the readers. Basing on the findings and results, the study put forwards some implications in the English language teaching and learning in the hope that they can be beneficial for not only English teachers but also for learners of English and for those who love satirical works in general. |
