Abstract: The study is devoted to describe and compare the syntactic and semantic features of the words and idioms expressing unhappiness in English versus Vietnamese to find out their similarities and differences. The study is based on the sample population of 400 idioms expressing unhappiness in English versus 400 counterpart samples in Vietnamese. The descriptive and comparative method could be used in combination with the qualitative and quantitative approach. From the study’s results, the thesis presents some predicted problems in teaching and learning English and Vietnamese as a foreign language. Besides, some implications have been offered in the hope of improving the teaching and learning English in general and English Versus Vietnamese idioms expressing unhappiness in particular
