Abstract: Although extensive reading (ER) has gained recognition in many countries and is being practiced, in Vietnam it is still uncommon. There are a huge number of previous studies conducted to evaluate the impact of applying ER in language learning in EFL class in universities. However, the studies about high school are still scarce. Inspired by current issues in reading status among Vietnamese high school students, the study aims to explore students’ perception and practice of ER in EFL context at Le Quy Don high school for the gifted. It further explores how teachers organize ER in classroom and highlights some challenges faced in the implementation of ER activities. Quantitative method has been used to conduct this research. This paper is concluded with some suggestions to implement ER in Le Quy Don high school for the gifted to help the learners improve their second language learning. It is suggested in the paper that a combination of initiatives such as raising awareness, teaching practice and changing the traditional curriculum can promote the practice of ER among the learners.
